To reduce the environmental impact of recreational boating, BENETEAU has chosen the path of innovation. Concrete and unprecedented innovations that take shape in two sailboats presented in a world premiere at the Nautic de Paris : the First 44e and the Oceanis 30.1e.

Recyclable resin construction, electric or hybrid motorization, alternative to teak… these boats open the way to the circular economy in sailing, and they go through an unprecedented stage in terms of sustainable recreational navigation and responsible purchasing.

FIRST 44E : « THE ECO-RESPONSIBLE BOAT CONCEPT BY BENETEAU »

  • 1er series boat built in recyclable ELIUM resin
  • Series-hybrid Torqeedo engine
  • Iroko roof coating

OCEANIS 30.1E : Multihull of the Year 100% ELECTRIC, A NEW NAVIGATION EXPERIENCE »

  • Torgeedo motorization 100% electrical

The two boats presented at the Paris Salon incorporate promising solutions that will be deployed on an industrial scale for models destined to be mass-produced and offered to a larger number of people.. It is an exceptional challenge that BENETEAU has taken on and a substantial transformation of recreational boating., committed to its customers.

With these innovations, BENETEAU consciously puts, the first seeds for a path that will be long but ineluctable. It is the responsibility of a leader to open the way and BENETEAU's vocation is to be the reference tomorrow in a market that will be totally modified..

We cannot force customers, but we can convince them. For it, we need pioneering projects: to develop new technologies and prepare the next leap forward. The transition is launched. The entire industry will have to transform .

BOATING TAKES ITS FIRST STEPS TOWARDS THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY

The First 44e has been entirely made with ELIUM resin, within the framework of an exclusive collaboration with Arkema. This resin is recyclable by solvolysis, pyrolysis or thermolysis, processes that allow to separate the fiberglass from the resin, during the deconstruction of the ship. The latter then becomes reusable to make new infusion parts for new boats.. The resin then enters a virtuous cycle, that minimizes the need for raw materials and reduces waste. In fact, This new material makes it possible to provide an improvement in the life cycle of boats.

With ELIUM resin the performance of the boat and the sensations of the recreational boater, they stay identical. Its implementation in a production line, it took three years of development and a thorough recast of our processes. First series model built in ELIUM, the First 44e is first and foremost an industrial feat.

BENETEAU strives elsewhere, to use naturally-derived fibers and bio-based resins whenever possible, especially for manufacturing non-structural composite parts.

ELECTRIC MOTOR: TOWARDS NEW NAVIGATION MODES

With the First 44e and the Oceanis 30.1e, BENETEAU explores two ways to reduce the carbon footprint of recreational boating by proposing two types of electric powertrains developed in collaboration with Torqeedo.

The First 44e hosts a series-hybrid propulsion system, where two pods – which integrate electric motors drive folding propellers – are powered by a battery park of 20 kW. Batteries can be recharged either in port, either at sea by diesel generator which guarantees a system that offers autonomy and comfort. But it puts on everything, the bases of new navigation modes : the "silent-yachting" that allows you to sail motorized in silence and the "silent motor sailing" where you can sail even with little wind, supported by electric motor which helps to create apparent wind. This hybrid-serial solution, offers great energy autonomy at anchor since the service batteries can be recharged with the 20kW of the motor park.

In the Oceanis 30.1e the retained solution is 100% electrical, always based on a Torqeedo pod whose 5kW battery can be recharged in port or with the help of solar panels. this sailboat, to be reserved for inland navigation areas at first, naturally invites its users to live new browsing experiences, more in harmony and with a new notion of time. It is the beginning of a path towards a new recreational navigation that associates the clients who want it and the brand in a common effort towards more sobriety..

RESPONSIBLE PURCHASES

On the deck of the First 44e, teak, exotic wood mostly produced in Burma, it has been replaced by iroko that comes from certified forests FSC from the Congo. It is used in the form of laminated-glued, that is to say, of thin layers of wood glued together. This new alternative product allows to be more virtuous from all points of view, guaranteeing the same resistance, the same touch sensation, and also a pleasant and natural stain with the duration comparable to that of teak.

This innovation makes it possible to make the choice of "responsible purchasing" without compromising on the design, comfort or elegance.

These two boats open a new era and are the result of the mobilization of our R teams&D for several years. The next stage will consist of deploying these innovations in the whole of the BENETEAU Sailing and Motor ranges and on all the group's boats.

Reducing the environmental footprint of sailing is a succession of challenges and small steps. Every innovation needs to imagine valid technical solutions, create collaborators, make investments... and obviously obtain the adhesion of the clients. Demand for a new recreational boating emerges. And our responsibility is to draw a path ; do not impose change in navigation practices, but make it possible.
